A core function of the role involves conducting tyre surveys across the fleet. The technician will be required to drive to various sites as scheduled and prioritise vehicles according to the fleet list provided by the supervisor.

Daily tyre surveys must be conducted using the Intersect Tyre Management Software. In instances where the system is offline, manual documentation must be completed and later captured electronically. All information recorded must be accurate and complete, including tyre brand numbers, wheel positions, tyre pressures, and tread depth measurements.

The technician must ensure that all fleet vehicles are surveyed monthly and that tyre pressures are maintained and corrected as required. Spare wheels must also be surveyed, with any missing or damaged spares reported to the supervisor. For ease of identification, spare wheel rims must be sprayed with red paint as per company standards.

In addition, the technician must ensure that all wheel nuts are correctly torqued and that wheel nut securing indicators are fitted. Where indicators are missing, these must be installed immediately. Scrap tyres must be photographed and reported to the supervisor as part of compliance and asset control procedures.

Ongoing communication with the supervisor is essential, including daily updates on vehicles surveyed, tyre issues identified, outstanding surveys, and overall productivity.

3. Tyre Branding

The technician will be responsible for identifying tyres that do not have visible brand numbers and reporting these to the supervisor. Tyres must be branded according to the approved brand listings provided, ensuring traceability and compliance with fleet management standards.

4. Tyre Replacement

The role includes identifying tyres that are smooth, punctured, or damaged and replacing them in accordance with standard operating procedures. All tyre replacements must be performed safely, efficiently, and in line with company and manufacturer guidelines.

Tyre change slips must be completed accurately and timeously for every tyre replaced. These slips must be submitted to the supervisor daily to ensure proper record-keeping, cost control, and audit compliance.

5. Tyre Rotations

The technician will carry out tyre rotations as required, ensuring that tyres are rotated according to tread matching and vehicle specifications. As with tyre replacements, all tyre rotations must be properly documented, and change slips must be accurately completed and submitted daily.

6. Breakdown Support

The incumbent will provide tyre-related breakdown support when required. This includes ensuring that the breakdown support vehicle is adequately stocked with the correct sizes and quantities of tyres for the specific breakdown.

The technician must respond promptly to breakdown calls, travel to the site, and resolve tyre-related issues with urgency while strictly adhering to South African road traffic laws and company driving rules. All breakdowns must be documented, including breakdown reports and tyre change slips for tyres removed and fitted.

Damaged or punctured tyres must be returned to the depot and handed over to the supervisor along with the relevant documentation.

7. Company Equipment and Asset Management
The technician will be responsible for the safekeeping and proper use of company equipment and assets. Tyre maintenance tablets must be locked away in a secure location when not in use and at the end of each shift.

Daily vehicle checklists must be completed and submitted to the supervisor for filing. Vehicles must always be parked securely and locked when not in use. Vehicle keys must be handed to the supervisor and locked in a safe after every shift.

All accidents, damages, or incidents involving company vehicles must be reported immediately. The technician must ensure that all tools and equipment are maintained in good working order, complete weekly tyre bay tool checklists, and report any defective tools to the supervisor without delay.

8. Housekeeping
Maintaining a clean and orderly working environment is essential. The technician must ensure that work areas, tyre bays, and company vehicles are kept clean, tidy, and organised at all times.

9. Health and Safety
The role involves working with potentially dangerous goods and equipment, making health and safety compliance critical. The technician must adhere to all safety rules and regulations, ensure the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, and immediately report any health and safety concerns, hazards, or near-miss incidents to the supervisor.

10. General Duties and Compliance
The technician must comply with all company procedures, policies, and standards, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), training requirements, HR policies, POPIA regulations, dress code, smoking policies, and attendance requirements.

The role may require assisting with additional company duties as needed, and weekend work may be required from time to time depending on operational demands.

1–2 years’ experience working with heavy-duty tyres
